Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) made it mandatory for property in 300 square yards to have a rainwater harvesting structure.
HMWS&SB Managing Director, K Ashok Reddy on Wednesday said for premises of over 300 square yards, the construction of RWH pits is mandatory and that a special action plan has been drawn up for the next three months on the RWH pits.
This year, groundwater levels significantly decreased in many areas, leading to a gradual increase in tanker demand due to poor rainfall, he said.
A survey of areas receiving the highest tanker bookings by the HMWS&SB had revealed that 42,000 residential premises were booking tankers due to groundwater depletion and of these more than 21,000 did not have RWH pits.
The water board announced a 90-day special action plan to raise awareness about constructing RWH pits in 200 square yard houses as well as residences over 300 square yards within ORR limits. The water board has already built 12,000 RWH pits with the help of NGOs and notices have been prepared for another 16,000 residential premises to build RWH pits.
