Sangareddy: Despite the ban on nylon manja sales in the State, sale of the dangerous thread is still thriving with many kite fliers demanding the manja. The seizures of nylon manja and filing of cases against traders in the erstwhile Medak district is an indication that the business is in full swing during the Sankranthi festival across the district.
During recent raids, Siddipet police seized 15 kg of nylon manja worth Rs 3.5 lakh and filed two cases. The Sangareddy police seized 70 packs of the manja and filed three criminal cases. Medak police also filed a case and seized a huge amount of nylon manja.
However, many shops are still selling the manja. While the police department is carrying out raids, there is no visible effort from the forest department so far in erstwhile Medak to check the menace of nylon manja. Though the glass-coated manja had claimed the lives of many birds, wildlife and even humans, the forest department has put no visible effort so far in these three districts to educate the citizens or raid the shops that sell nylon manja.
Pradeep Nair, founder of Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS), which has been conducting awareness programmes against the use of nylon manja, opined that there should be increased monitoring from Saturday onwards when holidays for educational institutions commence, to restrict the use of nylon manja. More children and youth would throng kite shops from Saturday onwards to buy kites and manja, he said.
