Sangareddy Collector warns of stringent action against drug peddlers
Collector said that he is ready to permit the excise department to invoke any number of PD Acts against drug peddlers to arrest the Ganja sales in district
Sangareddy: The district collector M Hanumantha Rao has instructed the officials to initiate stern action against the drug peddlers.
Saying that he is ready to permit the excise department to invoke any number of PD Acts against drug peddlers to arrest the Ganja sales in district, the collector has observed that there was a serious need to keep a strict vigil on the movement of the drug peddlers across the district. He made these comments when Andole ZPTC Member Kadirabad Ramesh raised concern over increasing drug addiction among the youth in Sangareddy during the Zilla Parishad General body meeting on Wednesday.
Saying that the drugs were being sold in all the major towns and even in villages in the district, Ramesh expressed pain stating that a number of youth were moving to deaddiction centres and hospitals. When he appealed to the Collector and Zilla Parishad Chairperson P Manjusri to initiate stern action against the drug peddlers, Hanumantha Rao sought the explanation of Excise Superintendent D Gayatri. Saying that the Ganja was not being grown in any parts of the Sangareddy district, Gayatri, however, said that the district has become a transit point to drug transportation to Maharashtra and Karnataka from Andhra Odisha Border.
Stating that they had kept a strict watch on their movement of Ganja peddlers, Gayatri said that they have nabbed a number of persons besides seizing huge quantities of Ganja. She further said that they have also invoked PD Act against a person, arrested on the charge of transporting ganja. However, the collector said that he will soon conduct an exclusive meeting on the Ganja peddling in the district in the presence of all the stakeholders. He further said that they will permit the excise department to invoke any number of PD Acts to keep the drug peddlers behind the bars. Protem Chairman of Legislative Council V Bhupal Reddy, MLAs M Bhupal Reddy, K Maik Reddy and others were present.
