Mancherial: A woman Sarpanch and her husband were arrested for allegedly assaulting a female Panchayat Raj secretary of Kothapalli village in Thandur mandal on Wednesday.

Thandur Sub-Inspector K Sekhar Reddy said the accused were Rajitha and Rajanna. The couple was taken into custody and booked under Sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), based on a complaint filed by K Keerthi on February 20.

Rajitha and Rajanna picked up an argument with Keerthi over granting excess bills relating to some developmental works in Kothapalli village. They confined Keerthi to a room, assaulted her and prevented her from discharging her official duties. A video clip showing the assault went viral on social media platforms.

It is learned that the couple targeted her since she was not ‘cooperating’ with the sarpanch and her husband in committing irregularities under the guise of developing the village.
