SC women from Sangareddy trained to drive ‘She Cabs’
The SC Corporation has tied up with Uber that will utilise the She Cab services in the Hitech city area to provide safe transportation for women in the IT sector.

Sangareddy: In an initiative aimed at economic empowerment of SC women, the Sangareddy branch of SC Corporation has trained 18 women from Scheduled Caste communities to drive to provide them with She Cabs. Introduced on a pilot basis, the SC Corporation selected the 18 women aged between 18 and 45 years, gave them training for a month at State Bank of India-Rural Self-Employment Training Institute (SBI- RSETI) in Sangareddy and issued driving licences. They were also educated on cab operation and etiquette.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Executive Director, SC Corporation, Babu Rao said the women had successfully completed their training. They will be handed over Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire cars on Monday, bought with bank loans through linkage and the corporation providing 60 per cent subsidy, he said, adding that each care costs Rs 7.3 lakh.
Sangareddy District Collector M Hanumantha Rao said Finance Minister T Harish Rao and Minister for Welfare Koppula Eshwar will visit Sangareddy to hand over the cabs to all the 18 beneficiaries on Monday. Since Hitech City is located close to Sangareddy district, the SC Corporation decided to launch the programme from the district on a pilot basis. The programme will be extended to other districts once the result of the experiment is known. As part of the training, representatives of Uber also conducted several classes to train them in etiquette. “All the women drivers will be given pepper spray to protect themselves,” Babu Rao said.
M Maheshwari (34), a beneficiary from Beeramguda in Ameenpur mandal, said her entire family lives on the earnings of her husband, who also runs a cab. Stating that she was dependent on her husband for everything till now, Maheshwari said she gained a lot of confidence after learning to drive. She thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for coming up with such a wonderful programme to empower women of backward communities.
