Sculptures of Vardhamana Mahavira found buried in Siddipet
Dr.Reddy said the sculptures dated 10th century AD representing Vemulawada Chalukyan style were originally housed in a dilapidated temple located on a mound locally called as Girannadibba.
Hyderabad: Sculptures of Vardhamana Mahavira and his associate Matanga Yaksha of historical importance are found buried in an ant hill in the outskirts of Pulluru village in Siddipet.
On coming to know about it, Archaeologist and CEO, Pleach India Foundation, Dr. E Sivanagi Reddy rushed to the spot based on information provided by Siddipet-based Kotta Telangana Charitra Brundam lead by Sriramoju Haragopal, Md.Naseeruddin and Md.Anwar Pasha on Wednesday and inspected sculptures thoroughly.
Dr.Reddy said the sculptures dated 10th century AD representing Vemulawada Chalukyan style were originally housed in a dilapidated temple located on a mound locally called as Girannadibba.
The team removed bushes grown on sculptures and laid bare to view. Reddy sensitised the local community on the historical significance of sculptures and spread of Jainism in early medieval and medieval periods in Siddipet and appealed to restore the temple and re-install the Jain idols apart from preserving Jaina heritage of Telangana for posterity.
The villagers assured to extend necessary cooperation in this regard if any Jaina organisation comes forward, he added.
