Hanamkonda: Officials of the District Medical and Health Department along with police and revenue officials raided a house at Kakakaji colony and seized an unregistered portable ultrasound scanning machine that was being used for sex determination of foetus. The officials also sealed the centre.
Sources said one Vemula Praveen of Gopalpur locality with the assistance of Dr A Sabitha, a Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) graduate, was conducting prenatal sex determination tests illegally and performing abortions, charging heavy fees. There were at least 10 pregnant women who had come for the tests from Hyderabad and even from other States at the centre.
District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr K Lalitha Devi said a complaint was lodged with the Hanamkonda police against the illegal operators of the centre including a ‘broker’ and sent the pregnant women to the Government Maternity Hospital, Hanamkonda, for tests. It is alleged that this illegal abortion racket had been operating for a long time.
Sources said sex determination tests were allegedly going on illegally even in authorised/registered scanning centres in the city due to a lack of proper surveillance. Additional DMHO Dr T Madhan Mohan Rao, DyDMHO Dr MD Yakubpasha, District Surveillance Officer Dr A Srikrishna Rao, Hanamkonda Sub-Inspector CH Raghupathi, Media Officer V Ashok Reddy and others were present during the raid.
Police have taken Praveen and Dr Sabitha into custody and taken up a detailed probe into the illegal sex determination racket. It is learnt that Praveen was also running a polyclinic in the city.
