Siddipet: Historians have discovered a rare 1000-year-old sculpture of goddess Mahishasura Mardini at Kondapaka in Siddipet district. The sculpture probably dates back to Kalyana Chalukyas period. Carved on a black stone, the sculpture depicting Goddess Durga in a posture of killing the demon Mahishasura. Samaleti Mahesh, a member of Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundam (KTCB), discovered the sculpture during his visit to Kondapaka.
Going by the history, Kondapaka was a well-known centre during the regimes of Rashtra Kutas, Kalayana Chalukyas and Kakatiyas. Archaeological evidences of these three periods were found in and around Kondapaka in the past. In the past, another 8th Century sculpture of goddess Mahishasura Mardini was found on the outskirts of Kondapaka.
KTCB Members Sriramoju Haragopal, Ahobilam Karnakar and Gurudas Ram Tejas urged the citizens of Kondapaka and the State government to put efforts to protect these rare sculptures.
