Siddipet: The Department of Agriculture, Siddipet, in collaboration with the Telangana Development Forum (TDF), has introduced precision agriculture, or smart farming, in Siddipet district. The initiative aims to boost productivity, reduce costs, and promote sustainable practices through data-driven technologies.
This approach seeks to curb the random use of agrochemicals by using satellite data to detect early signs of crop stress caused by biotic and abiotic factors. Satellite-based data collection helps monitor, manage, and improve farming operations, enabling farmers to make informed decisions based on accurate and real-time field information.
In Pedda Masanpally village of Thoguta mandal, four paddy farmers received guidance on precision farming techniques for their paddy fields during this Vanakalam season under the supervision of Agriculture Extension Officer (AEO) T Nagarjun.
Traditionally, crop stress becomes visible only after it spreads widely, leaving little room for timely intervention. This often results in excessive agrochemical use, raising costs and harming the environment. However, with satellite monitoring, Nagarjun explained, each field is mapped into geo-fenced grids of 3×3 metres. When stress develops in a particular grid, its severity is shown in the Krishivass mobile app through colour changes, from green to yellow, orange, pink, and finally red. Farmers also receive alert messages guiding them to the affected area.
Real-time satellite tracking enables prompt identification of issues and timely advisories from AEOs, allowing farmers to act early and reduce unnecessary chemical application. A woman farmer, Lalita, said that regular monitoring and timely advice had helped her control pests effectively this year.
TDF President Matta Rajeshwar Reddy noted that such technology-driven farming methods would help reduce risks and enhance agricultural sustainability.
