Adilabad: Soy farmers urged the government to provide compensation after they suffered losses due to substandard seeds of a particular brand.

Farmers from different parts of Jainath mandal alleged that they suffered huge losses as the seeds sold under the Tejaswi brand and manufactured by Sonam did not germinate properly. They alleged that they were unable to find details after scanning the QR codes on the bags and demanded compensation of Rs 15,000 per acre.

The farmers said they bought the soy seeds from three authorised dealers in Adilabad town and raised the crop on 450 acres in Laxmipur village alone. They, however, suffered losses as the seeds did not sprout. They charged that the company sold poor-quality seeds, leading to a financial burden on them.

Some of the farmers are said to have brought the issue to the notice of Agriculture officials and Collector Rajarshi Shah. They requested the officials to take action against the manufacturer. It was learnt that the Collector ordered a probe into the sale of the seeds. A team of officials visited the agricultural fields at Laxmipur and Jainath villages. The outcome of the visits is yet to be announced.
