Sprinter Mayavathi all set for a big leap in World Championships

Hyderabad: Athlete N Mayavathi is set to rule the track in the coming days. The 18-year-old has already proved her abilities with a stupendous show in the recently-concluded 65th SGFI National Open Selection trials held in Bhubaneswar where she emerged champion in the 100m and 200m events.
She is now all set to compete in the upcoming 19th World School Athletics Championships-School Gymnasiade, scheduled to be held in Normandy, France from May 14 to 22. The Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) student, who will compete in 100m and 200m, is the only girl from the State to be selected for the prestigious event after her performance in Bhubaneswar. Another TSWREIS student and para athlete Ravi Kiran also has been selected for the event in the 100m and javelin events in T-35 category.
“I am feeling happy to be selected to the world event. It is like dream come true. I want to give my best and win a medal for the country in this event,” said an elated Mayavathi. Hailing from a farmers’ family, Mayavathi, took to athletics as a 13-year-old because of her PET Jyothi when she was studying in seventh class. The native of Kamepally village in Nalgonda district, the athlete impressed everyone with her achievements.
“I won my first gold medal in the year 2019 in the sprint medley relay in Visakhapatnam in South Zone Nationals in the junior category. In 2020, I won a silver medal in the 200m and another in medley relay events South Zone Athletics even in under-16 category in Udupi. In 2021, I won a bronze medal in 100m and 2100m events in the under-18 category in Kerala,” she revealed.
The intermediate MPC second year student has a total of seven national medals – three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. At State level events, she ruled the track with 20 medals including 10 gold, 8 silver and two bronze.
“I joined the sports academy in Dindi in the year 2019 and started training with my coach Parushuram. My dream is to win a medal for the country in the Olympics. Playing in this World meet is a big boost to my confidence. I believe that I can do well at this level. I will work even harder to achieve my dream,” said Mayavathi who works six hours in a day – three in the morning and three in the evening – honing her skills at the TSWREIS Dindi Sports Academy under coach Parushuram.
