Warangal: High tension prevailed at Narsampet TGRTC depot as a driver poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire on Thursday during a protest as part of the indefinite strike called by the RTC JAC in support of their demands.
The driver, Shanker Goud, is said to be upset over the alleged adamant attitude of the Congress government towards RTC workers. His colleagues panicked and started shouting on noticing him on fire; they rushed to his rescue by dousing the flames and took him to the hospital.
Doctors are currently providing him treatment, while his fellow workers are hoping for Shanker Goud’s speedy recovery. The government’s failure to address the workers’ demands compelled him to take the extreme step, the workers alleged.
The situation caused a massive uproar at the Narsampet depot, while the enraged workers raised slogans against the RTC management and the government. As the situation spiralled out of control, the police intervened and attempted to restrain the protesters.
A heavy police force has been deployed at the depot to prevent any untoward incidents. It is said that the condition of the driver, Shanker Goud, remains critical. The union leaders held the government and the RTC management responsible for the incident.
