Hyderabad: In what could possibly be the first case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Hyderabad, following its outbreak in Pune, a woman from Siddipet with typical symptoms of GBS reportedly admitted to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad with symptoms of GBS. The woman is in a critical condition and on ventilator support, according to reports.

GBS is a post-infection syndrome, which usually occurs two to six weeks after a person gets an infection. It is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs and diarrhea. Usually, GBS occurs after a patient recovers from a severe bout of bacterial or viral infection, as they weaken the person’s immunity.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the exact reason for the spike in cases of GBS in Pune is not yet known. “GBS is prevalent in both pediatric and young-age groups, it will not cause or lead to an epidemic or pandemic. Most of the patients recover fully after treatment,” ICMR said.
