The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) is preparing for the rollout of 2,000 electric buses sanctioned under the Prime Minister e-Drive scheme. The corporation has sought Rs 392 crore and land for depots and charging stations to support the initiative.

A fire broke out in an electric bus at Karimnagar bus stand on Saturday morning. Flames erupted from the battery compartment, but the alert driver acted quickly. Firefighters reached the spot and brought the situation under control without casualties.

The temple body lodged a complaint with the police. The bus was later traced near Naidupeta in Tirupati district.

APSRTC launched 12 electric buses between Kadapa and Tirumala. They were inaugurated by corporation chairman Mallikarjuna Reddy.

Police said the incident occurred around 9am, when the bus was proceeding from Begumpet towards Paradise.

The financial capital is the last urban area where these double-deckers are still running, though they were once found in robust numbers in Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai, among other cities, officials said.
