Five cowherds stranded in the Munneru stream in Khammam’s Chintakani mandal were rescued by NDRF teams on Thursday. Heavy rains across the region caused a sharp rise in stream and river levels, prompting alerts in Khammam and surrounding areas.

Heavy rains in Maharashtra have triggered strong inflows into the Godavari River, benefiting dams and irrigation projects across Maharashtra and Telangana. With major tributaries swelling, Telangana expects robust inflows this kharif season. Medigadda barrage recorded 84,500 cusecs of floodwater.

As of Thursday morning, both inflow and outflow at the barrage reached 71,900 cusecs, a sharp increase from Wednesday’s inflow of 31,900 cusecs, effectively doubling in just two days. However, not even a trickle could be utilised as all the 85 gates of the barrage were kept open draining the flood flow for want of barrage rehabilitation.

Heavy rains have disrupted daily life and coal production in erstwhile Khammam, affecting SCCL opencast mines. Roads are flooded, mines are waterlogged, and district officials have issued advisories with helpline numbers and urged the public to stay indoors.

All 14 gates of Babli Barrage were opened to release Godavari water to SRSP in line with the Supreme Court’s directive. The release, supervised by Telangana, Maharashtra and CWC, supports irrigation and drinking water supply till October 2025.

The BRS leader also pointed out that former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had already written to the Centre, clearly explaining how surplus water in Godavari River should be shared between the Telugu States.

Harish Rao rubbished Revanth Reddy's claim that Chandrashekhar Rao had agreed to only 299 TMCft of Krishna water, calling it a blatant lie.

The AP Chief Minister also claimed he had never objected to the construction of Kaleshwaram and that Andhra Pradesh was only trying to use water that would otherwise flow into the sea.

Before visiting the temple for having a darshan, the family went to the Godavari River for a ritual dip.
