Meanwhile, in West Bengal, elections to the 294-member state Assembly is held in eight phases that started on March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29.

Elections to 294 constituencies in the state will be held in eight phases till April 29 and the results will be declared on May 2.

Veteran TMC MP Sisir Adhikari - father of Suvendu Adhikari - joined the BJP at Egra on Sunday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior leaders of the party.

Earlier in the day, Adhikari had asserted that his son Suvendu, locked in a fierce battle with Chief Minister and TMC boss Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram, will bag the seat at ease.

He also accused the Banerjee government of patronising underground Maoist rebels.

"No other government in the world has been able to do as much work as ours. Their (BJP) prime minister cannot run the country, totally incompetent," she said.

Banerjee was injured on March 10 following which she was admitted to SSKM hospital in Kolkata.

The TMC had announced it will release its manifesto on March 9 but later decided to postpone it to March 11 due to the Kolkata fire incident which claimed nine lives.

The country is facing an unprecedented situation today. The strength of democracy lies in the strength of the institutions of democracy. All these institutions including the judiciary have become weak now, said Sinha, right after joining TMC.

The TMC has made allegations against Suvendu Adhikari, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Nandigram in the upcoming state Assembly polls.

Adhikari, who switched over to the BJP in December, is up against the chief minister who decided to challenge him at his home ground.

The chief minister is at present undergoing treatment at the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata with injury to her left leg, waist, shoulder and neck, according to doctors.

TMC national spokesperson and RS member O'Brien, in his letter, mentioned two precedents when Parliament sessions were adjourned due to polls in states.

"I will be the goalkeeper in the assembly polls and you (BJP) will not be able to score a single goal. All shots will fly above the goal post," Banerjee added.

Maidul Islam Midda, a resident of Kotulpur in Bankura district, was critically injured and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in south Kolkata.
