A field survey across Telangana has revealed glaring lapses in road safety infrastructure around schools, with most lacking warning boards, speed limit signage, zebra crossings, and speed breakers. The study also flagged inadequate pedestrian facilities and absence of monitoring systems, raising concerns over children’s safety in school zones.
The NHRC has directed Telangana authorities to improve zebra crossings at key Hyderabad junctions within eight weeks, following a petition citing pedestrian safety concerns. The move highlights the need to ensure safer road crossings and uphold the right to life.
Several major junctions in Hyderabad, including KBR Park and Jubilee Hills Check Post, lack zebra crossings, making road crossing unsafe during peak hours. Commuters have urged GHMC to prioritise road safety by repainting and maintaining pedestrian markings, especially after heavy rains fade them.
