Hyderabad: A recent field survey of school zones across Telangana has revealed alarming shortcomings in road safety infrastructure, with a majority of schools lacking essential facilities designed to protect children from traffic hazards.

According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police officials, 80 per cent of schools did not have official ‘School Zone’ warning boards, while 90 percent lacked mandatory speed limit signage. The study also found that 70 per cent of roads leading to schools were without zebra crossings and that an equal percentage of school entrances had no speed breakers to slow down approaching vehicles.

Pedestrian infrastructure was also found to be inadequate in many areas. Nearly 60 per cent of schools lacked proper sidewalks, while another 20 per cent had narrow or restricted footpaths, forcing students to navigate unsafe road conditions. In addition, 70 per cent of schools did not have dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones, increasing congestion and safety risks during school hours.

The survey further highlighted serious gaps in monitoring and emergency response systems. Around 80 per cent of schools had no structured accident reporting protocol, while none of the surveyed school zones were equipped with traffic enforcement cameras to monitor violations and improve compliance.
