Hyderabad: In what could be seen as a boon for students seeking admissions into the Intermediate courses, 119 BC Welfare Residential Schools have been upgraded to junior colleges. The upgraded ones include 56 for boys and 63 for girls, while four colleges have been turned into College of Excellence which will provide intensive coaching for students preparing for various competitive entrance examinations. With an intake of 9,520 seats, the new junior colleges will be functional from the academic year 2021-22.

Presently, 123 schools including 64 for boys and 59 for girls, 119 residential schools-cum-junior colleges, 19 junior colleges and one BC Welfare Residential Degree College for Women are under the control of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society. These 119 BC Welfare Residential Schools commenced admissions from the academic year 2017-18 and they are upgraded as the first batch of Class X students have passed the SSC Public Exams this year and they will be joining the Intermediate courses.

With the upgradation, admissions in a total of 138 junior colleges will be up for grabs from the academic year 2021-22. These colleges will offer core groups including MPC, BiPC, MEC, CEC and HEC. This apart, for the first time, the society has introduced 10 vocational courses — Agriculture & Crop Production, Accounting & Taxation, Office Assistantship, Computer Graphics & Animation, Home Science, Commercial Garment Technology, Multipurpose Health Assistant, Medical Lab Technician, Physiotherapy, and Tourism & Hospitality Management. These courses will be made available in certain colleges only.

The admissions will be based on the entrance test for which the Society has already invited applications from eligible candidates. Students who completed SSC or its equivalent course in the academic year 2020-21 are eligible to appear for the entrance test. According to the Society, 25 per cent of seats will be reserved for students who studied in the BC Welfare Residential Schools and BC Welfare Hostel Boarders.

Not just for students, upgradation of schools into junior colleges will also benefit candidates seeking a government job. These new junior colleges will require about 877 faculty members and 50 per cent of them will be recruited under direct recruitment quota and the rest through promotions. “This year, we have upgraded 119 BC Welfare Residential Schools which commenced in 2017-18 into junior colleges. The posts in the newly-upgraded junior colleges may be recruited by the State government as part of 50,000 jobs recruitment plan,” a senior official of the Society told ‘Telangana Today’.
