Mulugu: A four-year-old boy died after consuming poison pellets that had been laid out to kill monkeys in Mulugu district.
According to sources, Govindaraopet village in the district faced a monkey menace. In order to eliminate monkeys, the gram panchayat staff placed poison pellets within a nursery area of the local Anganwadi centre.
They had mixed these odorless poison pellets into ‘Balamrutham’—a nutritional supplement distributed to young children at Anganwadi centres. The deceased boy, Harshith Nandan (4), the son of an RMP doctor, Shravan of NTR Nagar, came to the Anganwadi centre on Sunday evening while playing with his friends.
At that moment, he spotted the Balamrutham laced with the poison pellets and consumed it. Following this, he fell ill and his family members immediately rushed him to Government Hospital at Mulugu.
As his condition worsened, he was shifted to MGM Hospital in Warangal for better treatment. Harshith died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment. The boy’s death caused a pall of gloom to descend on the village, while many expressed anger at the gram panchayat staff’s action of using poison to address monkey menace.
