Hyderabad: Another instance of alleged extreme work pressure impacting the medical profession has come to light. This time, a Post-Graduate (PG) medical student, Dr Ravi Kumar Ashamoni, who completed his MBBS from RIMS, Adilabad, Telangana State, and was pursuing PG in Forensic Medicine at AIIMS, Raipur, has died by suicide.

According to local reports, 26-year-old Dr Ravi Kumar was found dead in his apartment at Harshit Towers, Raipur on Sunday.

His junior doctors at AIIMS Raipur started making phone calls to him when he did not reach the hospital on time. When multiple calls were not answered, they reached his flat, only to find his lifeless body.

Reports indicated that Dr Ravi Kumar committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling fan and also had left a suicide note in which he allegedly spoke about extreme work pressure at AIIMS Raipur.

The incident has shocked the community of senior residents and MBBS colleagues of Dr Ravi Kumar from Hyderabad, who fondly recalled working and studying with him.

“Words feel inadequate to express the sorrow we feel on learning about the passing of our beloved Dr Ravi Kumar Ashamoni. Continuous harassment from the department faculty and unbearable work pressure has led him to take the only step he thought that would bring closure i.e. suicide,” the members of Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association (TSRDA) said.

Demanding swift and unbiased and proper enquiry on the responsible officials at AIIMS Raipur, the Senior Residents from Hyderabad demanded that authorities must punish culprit/culprits soon and bring justice to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, national president, IMA, Junior Doctors Network, Dr Dhruv Choudhan also demanded justice. “How long will it take for the National Medical Commission to enquire into the cases of depression and suicides amongst doctors? How does the concerned department where such cases happen don’t face investigation to find the root cause?” Dr Chouhan posted his reaction on social media platform X.
