Hyderabad: Nearly a decade after initiating the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme, the Telangana government has approved a Rs 7,360 crore mega water augmentation project to bring an additional 20 TMC of Godavari water to the Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR), including areas beyond Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road.
The new project – covering Phases II and III of the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme – is aimed at enhancing the drinking water infrastructure for Greater Hyderabad and 27 municipalities surrounding the city. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has finalised the tender process and is preparing to lay the foundation stone, with the ceremony expected to be attended by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy later this month.
Since 2015, the Water Board has been supplying 172 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated Godavari water under Phase I. Of the total 30 TMC allocation of Godavari water for drinking purposes to Hyderabad, 10 TMC has already been utilised. The present project aims to make use of the remaining 20 TMC.
A senior HMWSSB official explained that of the 20 TMC allocation, 15 TMC – equivalent to 300 MGD – will be supplied through the two phases, while the remaining 5 TMC will be used for replenishing Osmansagar and Himayathsagar reservoirs as part of the Musi River Rejuvenation Project.
As per the detailed project report (DPR) and blueprint prepared in 2015 under the previous BRS government, raw water will be drawn from Mallannasagar and conveyed to Ghanpur, where a Water Treatment Plant (WTP) of 1,170 MLD capacity will be constructed. Treated water will then be distributed across TCUR municipalities and beyond GHMC limits.
“We require 60 acres for the WTP in Ghanpur. While the Board owns 50 acres, the remaining 10 acres will be acquired from the Forest Department,” the official said.
Two additional WTPs – one with a capacity of 120 MLD at Osmansagar and another with 70 MLD at Himayathsagar – will be constructed to treat the remaining 5 TMC intended for the twin reservoirs.
In total, 232 km of pipeline will be laid to connect Mallannasagar to Ghanpur, Muthangi, Osmansagar, and Himayathsagar under the new scheme.
Once completed, the total water supply capacity of the HMWSSB is expected to increase from the current 580 MGD to 880 MGD, serving a projected population of over one crore across Hyderabad and its expanding peripheries.
