Telangana govt degree colleges emerge top choice for UG education

Government degree colleges in Telangana have emerged as the top choice for undergraduate admissions, securing nearly half of the 56,147 seats allotted in the first phase of DOST 2026 counselling.

Hyderabad: Government degree colleges emerged as the preferred choice for students for their undergraduate education in the State.

Over 49 percent out of 56,147 seat allotments released via DOST 2026 first phase web counselling were allotted in the government-run degree colleges.

As per the details shared by the Commissionerate of Collegiate Education, of the total 27,853 allotments in the government-run degree colleges, 8,079 allotments were made at government degree colleges and 19,774 allotments to government autonomous colleges.

Government autonomous colleges filled 19,774 seats out of 45,180 available, achieving a 43.77 percent seat-filling rate. Government City College Hyderabad led with 1,755 allotments against 1,980 seats (88.64 percent). Government Degree College Khairatabad recorded 1,552 allotments (80.83 percent), and Girraj Government College Nizamabad secured 1,421 allotments (74.01 percent).

Other notable institutions include SRR Government Arts and Science College Karimnagar, Kakatiya Government College Hanamkonda, Government Degree College Siddipet, and MVS Government Arts and Science College Mahabubnagar.

Commissioner of Collegiate Education A Sridevasena said the DOST first phase admissions reflect students’ confidence in government degree colleges. “Students and parents recognise their academic credibility, affordability, improved infrastructure, autonomous academic flexibility, diverse course options, and comprehensive student welfare systems,” she said.

According to her, government autonomous colleges are particularly attracting students through strong academic environments, diversified programmes, and robust support systems.
Allotted candidates must complete online self-reporting through the DOST portal on or before May 23. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the seat.

Candidates allotted to degree colleges eligible for e-PASS fee reimbursement, subject to verification of caste and income certificates, need not pay any amount for seat reservation during online self-reporting. The second phase registration and web options will be available up to May 26, with seat allotments scheduled for May 30.
