Hyderabad: The State government has initiated steps to modernise its grain storage infrastructure by exploring the establishment of advanced grain silos at 20 locations in major paddy producing districts.
The initiative is said to be part of a broader effort to strengthen grain procurement, storage, transportation and distribution systems through technology-driven solutions.
Civil Supplies and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy who chaired a meeting at Dr BR Ambedkar State Secretariat on Friday, directed officials to prepare detailed proposals on suitable locations, storage capacities, investment requirements and implementation strategies.
According to officials, the government is examining the feasibility of developing a silo network with an initial storage capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes. The proposed facilities are aimed at reducing post-harvest losses, preserving grain quality, improving transportation efficiency and strengthening the overall supply chain.
The existing procurement mechanism will continue without any changes. Self-Help Groups (SHGs), IKP centres and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS), which currently play a key role in procurement, will continue to be involved.
Officials informed that modern silos would enable automated grain handling, digital quality testing, scientific storage and sensor-based monitoring. The system is also expected to help address challenges such as labour shortages and transportation delays.
