The village is located between Manjeera river and Nizam Sagar Dam. Since the dam was receiving huge inflows, officials opened six gates to release water downstream. As a result, the entire village was inundated forcing the villagers to stay indoors from Saturday.
Since then, students were in a dilemma on how to appear for the examination.
Following a request from students, Tahsildar Rammohan Rao requested the Irrigation officials to close the dam gates to stop discharge of water. In response, the officials reduced the discharge levels and helped the students appear for degree exam by crossing the canal. Meanwhile, many villagers also came out to purchase essential commodities.
Mandal Parishad Development Officer Venkateswara Rao distributed Asara pensions to beneficiaries at the canal itself. The timely initiative by officials of Revenue and Irrigation departments won accolades from the villagers. The villagers face inundation whenever the gates of Nizam Sagar Dam are opened during monsoon.
When contacted, Banswada Revenue Divisional Officer M Raja Goud said the 80,000 cusecs discharge levels from the six gates that were opened a few days ago were reduced to 31,000 cusecs to enable students and villagers attend to their regular works.
In the evening, the discharge levels were again increased to 55,000 cusecs after villagers and students returned to their houses. After the State government sanctioned a bridge for the convenience of villagers, pillars were constructed and slabs have to be laid between them.
But the works were affected because of heavy rains and increasing water discharge levels from the dam, he added.
