Hyderabad: The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed industries and general public to accept digitisation in a much faster pace and this has translated to increasing episodes of fraud, hacking and data breaches. The Telangana government, according to a top government official, is making all efforts to reduce these attacks even as it wants citizens to become digitally savvy.
Speaking at the launch of 14th edition of Data Breach Investigations Report 2021 of Verizon Business Group, Telangana IT and Industries department principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan said, “Every aspect of our lives moved towards digital in the post Covid world and Telangana was the fastest adopter of digital. There have been adverse consequences due to this rapid digitisation and the State has not ignored the importance of a robust cyber security system. We have created a Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security in association with Data Security Council of India wherein researchers and startups can develop solutions.”
He also added that in the post Covid world, the State saw a rise in KYC scam wherein citizens were robbed of their money using fraudulent means. “A leading pharmaceutical company was hit by data breach, from which we have gained valuable insights on protecting critical data bases,” he informed.
Speaking at the same event, the US Consul General in Hyderabad, Joel Reifman said that a report by UN stated that in the last three years, financial breaches were on the rise. “Keeping this mind, India-US bilateral relations started focusing on cyber security and also look at cyber defence dialogue. The US Department of Commerce will be organising a cyber-security event in November and Hyderabad will be a pit stop,” Reifman said.
Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy spoke about how Telangana has been at the forefront of cyber security and the various initiatives like the CoE and this report are testimony to the State’s commitment towards preventing online frauds.
