Hyderabad: Finance Minister T Harish Rao on Sunday said the per capita income in Telangana was Rs.2.78 lakh in 2021-22, more than double of what it was in 2014-15 when it was Rs.1.24 lakh.
“It’s more than doubled now,” he said, participating in the concluding ceremony of a national convention on rivers here. The primary sector income was Rs.2.16 crore in 2021-22 as against Rs.90,828 crore in 2014-15. The investment on water and agriculture really contributed to achieve it. “We invested in the key irrigation and agriculture sectors under the guidance of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao,” he said.
Underling the importance of use of water effectively to prevent it from flowing into the sea, he said the Central government should change the ideology, Acts and systems since the country has Land Acquisition Act and Forest Act among other rules, which delay the execution of the projects.
“We spent over two years in getting 15 clearances from various Central government agencies including the Central Water Commission (CWC) for construction of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS). After getting clearances, we completed KLIS in three and a half years,” Harish Rao said.
KLIS is now the world’s biggest multi-lift irrigation project. The Chief Minister used to monitor the progress of construction of KLIS works on a daily basis and this enabled it to complete in a record time.
Harish Rao said that Sardar Sarovar Dam took 19 years to get permission and necessary clearances after contemplating it in 1961. In 1980, physical works were started and it was completed in 2017. Similarly, the Sriramsagar project was completed in 1978 after laying the foundation stone by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964.
At that time, there were no land acquisition problems, but the State government completed KLIS in a record time. Referring to the recently inaugurated Mallannasagar project, Harish Rao said, “Because of typical terrain, water has to be lifted and when there is no reservoir, we constructed Mallannasagar reservoir with a capacity of 50 TMC to meet the needs of industrial, agriculture and irrigation sectors in 13 districts and drinking water requirements of Hyderabad.”
MLC Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, who was also present at the event, explained in detail about the initiatives taken up by the State government on agriculture and irrigation sectors.
