Hyderabad: Despite the uncertainties of Covid pandemic, Telangana has performed exceedingly well in organ donations and conducting organ transplants under the State-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative.
In 2021, the State recorded 162 donations, which is the highest since the launch of the organ donation programme in Telangana in 2013. In the process, a total of 616 organs were donated from 162 brain dead patients across the State.
In 2020, during the first Covid wave, almost the entire organ transplantation programme activity in private and government hospitals in Telangana had to be paused due to threat of infections. As a result, the number of deceased donors in 2020 was 75 and the organs retrieved for transplantation was 257, which was also the lowest since 2013.
However, with the improvement of Covid infection prevention protocols and safety measures at government and private hospitals in 2021, there were 162 donations from brain dead patients.
“This year, we managed to restore normalcy and take-up organ donation initiative back to pre-Covid days. The improvement in donations and retrieval of organs has gone a long way in helping needy patients, who were desperately waiting for donor organs,” in-charge, Jeevandan, Dr G Swarnalatha said.
Overall, as part of Jeevandan initiative, between 2013 and 2021, relatives of 968 brain dead patients had donated 3,675 organs and tissues of the deceased for needy patients of Telangana.
