Telangana police starts probing ‘Bulli Bai’ app harassment

Hyderabad: The Telangana police have taken up cognizance of a complaint of online harassment of a city based journalist and researcher after her details were posted on an app called ‘Bulli Bai’.
A picture of the woman, who worked previously with different media organizations, was posted with other details. The app was posting photos of Muslim women and stating that they are for auction. The same was done by an app named ‘Sulli Deals’ earlier.
The journalist took to Twitter to raise the issue of online harassment through the app.
“All it took to snap me out of a Twitter break was learning that someone auctioned my photo,” she wrote.
Photos of several Muslim women were uploaded on an app called ‘Bulli Bai’ on open-source platform GitHub, which led to a massive outrage on Twitter.

Chandrashekhar Rao, IT Minister KT Rama Rao and DGP M Mahendar Reddy to initiate action.
“A symbolic FIR is not enough. They should be arrested. The government should avail the services of CI cell & anti-radicalisation department of the force,” Owaisi said on Twitter.
Meanwhile the police took cognizance of the online complaint received from the city-based victim and started efforts to track down the persons who created the app and administering it.
“An online complaint was received and a probe is being initiated in the case. The victim said she will be filing a formal complaint on Monday,” an official said.
Following similar complaints from victims, police in New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh registered cases and are investigating.
