Hyderabad: Following strong opposition from the student and teacher community, the State government has finally revised timings for schools and junior colleges under the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS).
As per the circular issued by the TGSWREIS on Friday, commencing the academic year 2026-27 from June 12, the institutions will operate from 9 am to 4.30 pm as against 8 am to 4.30 pm in the last academic year.
After the morning assembly from 9 am to 9.15 am, students will have the first class at 9.15 am instead of 8.15 am earlier. However, the wake-up time at 5 am and bedtime at 9 pm remain unchanged.
The earlier timing caused serious concerns among teachers and students, who said the schedule was designed in an unscientific manner, increasing pressure and stress among students besides affecting their physical and mental health. Teachers lamented that the new working hours had also become difficult for the staff as there were no dormitories on the school premises.
Students, as per the revised timings, have to wake up at 5 am followed by one hour of exercise and yoga until 6.15 am. After one hour and 15 minutes of personal time, students have been given 30 minutes for breakfast until 9 am. Following the morning assembly, classes will be conducted up to 11.30 am, with a 15-minute break until 11.45 am, after which classes will continue from 11.45 am to 1.15 pm. Students of Classes V to VII will have a lunch break from 12.30 pm to 1.15 pm, whereas students of Classes VIII to Intermediate will break for lunch from 1.15 pm to 2 pm.
Classes, along with supervised study, will continue from 2 pm to 4.30 pm. After a snack break from 4.30 pm to 5 pm, students will have one hour for sports and games until 6 pm, followed by 30 minutes of personal time, and dinner is scheduled between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm. After self-study from 7.30 pm to 9 pm, students have to go to bed between 9 pm and 9.15 pm.
TSWRTU chairman Dr Rama Laxman, president Balswamy and general secretary Kirti Ravi said the new schedule would provide adequate time for morning preparation, hygiene, exercise and breakfast. It would reduce stress and fatigue caused by early academic schedules.
The revised schedule will contribute significantly to the holistic development of students by ensuring a balanced routine that includes academics, physical fitness, health monitoring, sports and supervised study, they added.
