Telangana recorded 23,679 crimes against women in 2023, up from 22,065 in 2022, with a high rate of abetment to suicide. NCRB data highlights persistent high crime rates, urging stricter law enforcement and social support for vulnerable women
Hyderabad: Telangana has recorded a sharp rise in crimes against women, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 data. The state registered 23,679 cases of crimes against women in 2023, compared to 22,065 cases in 2022, marking a continuing upward trend over the past three years.
As per the NCRB report, with a mid-year projected female population of 125.1 lakh, Telangana reported a crime rate of 189.6 per lakh women, nearly three times the national average of 66.2. The chargesheeting rate in the state stood at 88.1 per cent, above the national average of 77.6 per cent.
IPC crime head-wise break-up (2023):
According to the NCRB report, there were 14 cases of murder with rape or gang rape during the year, a rate of 0.1 per lakh women. Likewise, 145 dowry deaths were reported, affecting 147 victims.
The 14 cases of murder with rape or gang rape reflect a smaller but serious share, accounting for 6 per cent of India’s total of 233 such cases in 2023. There were also 401 cases of abetment to suicide, affecting 409 victims. Telangana’s abetment to suicide cases account for over 8 per cent of the national total of 4,959 cases, making it one of the states with the highest burden in this category.
While dowry deaths remain a major concern nationally, Telangana’s 145 cases place it among states with moderate incidence compared to high-burden states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
At the national level, India recorded 4.48 lakh cases of crimes against women in 2023, with a crime rate of 66.2 per lakh women. Uttar Pradesh topped in absolute numbers, while Telangana ranked among the states with the highest crime rates relative to population.
The NCRB data underlines the state’s persistent high incidence of crimes against women, especially in cases of suicide abetment. The report also suggested the need for stricter enforcement of protective laws, social awareness programs, and support mechanisms for vulnerable women to reverse this disturbing trend.
