Hyderabad: Telangana recorded the highest growth rate (9.2%) of per capita electricity consumption in the country, up from 1,896 kwh (2018- 19) to 2,071 kwh (2019-20), the Telangana State Statistical Abstract said.

Rising electrical consumption is correlated with higher development and human welfare indicators. There are 1.65 crore electricity connections in the State, of which 72.8 per cent are domestic connections, 15.4 per cent agricultural and 11.6 per cent industrial connections.

Telangana is the only State supplying 24 hours free power to 25.63 lakh agriculture consumers from 2014-15 to 2020-21. Hyderabad has the highest number of domestic connections (17.1 lakh) and industrial connections and others (4.02 lakh). Nalgonda has the highest number of agricultural connections at 2.03 lakh. The State’s total contracted capacity of electricity was 16,613 MW (as of September 2021). Of this, 51 per cent is generated by the State, 16 per cent by the Centre and 33 per cent by private players. The generation capacity of the Telangana State Generation Company (TSGENCO) is 6,215 MW of which 60.7 per cent of the generation capacity is thermal and 39.2 per cent is hydel.

Telangana is focused on creation of enabling infrastructure encompassing transportation, communication networks, sewage, water, and electric systems. Infrastructure facilitates an increase in productivity, attracts business activity, lowers transport and production costs and improves markets access and is crucial to sustain economic growth. The State has 1.07 lakh km road network and 23 national highways running through Telangana with a cumulative length of 3,910 km. The Roads and Building (R&B) Department maintains 27,672 km of roads in the State, of which 92.8 per cent is blacktop (BT) road, 3.3 per cent is unmetalled road and 2.9 per cent is cement concrete.

The Panchayati Raj and Rural Development department maintains 67,276 km of roads in the State. GHMC maintains 9,013 km of roads in Rangareddy, Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.
Out of this length, 2,846 km are BT Roads and 6,167 km are concrete roads.

The total number of motor vehicles registered decreased by 33.6% from 12.39 lakh vehicles in 2019- 20 to 8.22 lakh vehicles in 2020-21. On the banking front, there are 5,442 scheduled commercial banks in Telangana, with total deposits worth Rs 6.11 lakh crores and credit worth Rs 5.69 lakh crore for the April-June quarter 2021-22.
