Hyderabad: The Telangana Teacher Eligibility Test (TG TET) – II 2024 recorded a significant drop in registrations, raising concerns about the future of teacher education in the State.
In response to the TG TET – II notification issued by the School Education department, 2,75,773 candidates applied as the registrations closed on Wednesday. This number of applications represents a significant drop from 2,86,386 this year and a staggering decrease from 4,78,055 in 2023.
According to details released by the department, 94,335 candidates registered for the paper – I, conducted for aspirants seeking teaching eligibility for Classes, I to V. As for paper – II, held to determine eligibility to teach Classes VI to VIII, 1,81,438 aspirants applied.
These figures are notably low when compared with the TET – I held in May this year. The paper – I saw 99,958 registrations and paper – II received 1,86,428 applications. During the last year, the paper – I attracted a staggering 2,69,557 registrations and paper – II saw 2,08,498 registrations.
This year, a high number of registrations were expected since the in-service teachers looking for promotions have been asked to appear for the TET. However, the registrations have plummeted to a new low.
Another reason for drop in the applications may be attributed to validity of the test, which has been enhanced from seven years to lifetime. Barring a few seeking improvement in the scores, the teacher job aspirants have not been appearing for the test.
Meanwhile, candidates who applied for the TET have been given an opportunity to edit their application on the website https://schooledu.telangana.gov.in/ till November 22. The detailed schedule of examinations would be released at a later date, said AV Narasimha Reddy, Director School Education.
