Sangareddy: Every summer, there is an alarming rise in drowning deaths across the erstwhile Medak district. While youth venture into the water bodies to get respite from the sweltering heat, fishermen also get into water bodies for fishing since water levels recede.

The subsequent accidents, which are being attributed to carelessness, lack of sign boards, and monitoring from officials, have seen 36 deaths in various water bodies across erstwhile Medak since March 1.

Despite police officials and district Collectors cautioning people through different means, asking them to stay away from water bodies, the drownings continue. During the last two days, five people drowned in three separate incidents.

While two persons drowned in a lake at Borapatla in Hathnoora mandal of Sangareddy district on Saturday, a fisherman drowned in a lake in Jinnaram mandal. Two other youngsters drowned in a check dam near Medak town on Sunday.

Out of the 36 deaths reported, five were of fishermen while devotees coming to the Edupayala temple and drowning in Ghanpur anicut and Manjeera river became regular news in Medak.

Many were venturing into water bodies in an inebriated condition. Spiritual places, where the water bodies were located, were also reporting several such incidents.

People point out the need to appoint expert divers at Edupayala, Ranganyaka Sagar, Kondapochamma Sagar, Mallanna Sagar and other major water bodies restricting the entry of people into the water bodies by keeping constant watch.
