Hyderabad: Telangana boxer Nikhat Zareen’s dream run at the Bosphorus Boxing Tournament in Istanbul came to an end in the semifinal as she went down to local favourite Busenaz Cakiroglu to settle for a bronze, on Friday.
The 24-year-old boxer from Nizamabad, who defeated reigning world champion Paltceva Ekaterina of Russian in pre-quarterfinals and two-time world champion Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan in quarterfinals, succumbed to 2019 World Championships silver-medallist Cakiroglu 0-5.
Nikhat Zareen, competing in the same category as Mary Kom in 51 kg, returned to action after a year-long gap due to coronavirus. Having undergone a rigorous training in a bio-bubble in New Delhi since January, Nikhat impressed everyone on her return to ring with big victories.
Meanwhile, 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Gaurav Solanki (57kg) also sailed into the semifinals after a tough contest against local pugilist Aykol Mizan. Solanki showed his technical supremacy to secure a 4-1 win and assured himself of at least a bronze medal.
Sonia Lather (57kg), Parveen (60kg) and Jyoti (69kg) made exits by losing in their quarterfinal bouts. Meanwhile, Shiva Thapa (63kg) lost 1-4 to Turkey’s Hakan Dogan in an intense bout.
