Hyderabad: A series of proactive measures aimed at breaking the transmission chains of SARS-CoV-2 and containing the second wave of the Covid pandemic taken-up across Telangana in the last four months has led to a consistent decline in daily number of infections.
The measures also have played a crucial role in preventing resurgence of Covid infections in August and September, senior public health officials said.
By the end of this April, when the second Covid wave was at its peak, the daily new Covid infections had touched the 10,000 mark. But since then, the drop, although slow, has been steady. At present, the daily new Covid infections across Telangana are hovering between 150 and 200 cases and the daily fatality has dropped to just one.
“In the last six months, we have implemented a series of measures to contain Covid-19. Innovative strategies like house-to-house fever survey, special Covid OPs, Covid testing and aggressive vaccination have helped Telangana contain second wave and thwart the risk of a third wave,” Director of Public Health (DPH) Dr G Srinivasa Rao said.
While the fatality and positivity rates of Covid infections have dropped considerably, there are still daily Covid infections getting reported from urban areas, especially from areas under GHMC.
“The daily infections have hovered between 150 and 200 positive cases and areas under GHMC are reporting anywhere between 60 and 70 daily positive cases, indicating that the Delta variant continues to circulate in the environment. People must continue to follow Covid appropriate behaviour till December and get vaccinated at the earliest,” he said.
To contain the Delta variant, the health department has launched an aggressive vaccination strategy and so far close to 2.8 crore eligible persons have received Covid vaccines out of which 2.2 crore had received the first dose.
In September, about 75 lakh individuals were vaccinated and this month, authorities are targeting to cover 1 crore individuals across Telangana.
“There are 25 lakh persons who are yet to get second dose of Covid vaccine. To get complete protection, it is important to get the second dose of Covid vaccine. In October, we will cover at least 1 crore individuals in Telangana,” DPH said.
Apart from implementing containment strategies, a concerted effort was also launched in the last two-months to augment infrastructure in the government hospitals, which is needed in case of a third Covid wave.
As part of this effort, out of 28,000 Covid beds in the government hospitals, already 21,000 beds have individual oxygen supply. About 131 oxygen generation plants have been established and more RTPCR testing laboratories are being established in all the 33 districts.
