Karimnagar: A Telugu man who was living in London was nabbed from the Bengaluru airport and handed over to the Karimnagar rural police on charges of threatening and demanding money from Choppadandi MLA Medipalli Satyam over a WhatsApp call. He was produced before court here on Tuesday.

According to the police, on September 28 last year, MLA Satyam received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number demanding Rs.20 lakh. The caller also threatened to defame him and make his two children orphans if he did not pay up.

Based on a complaint lodged by the MLA, police began investigation by registering a case under sections BNS 308, 351(3), (4), section 3(1) (r) (s), 3(2) (va) of SCs & STs (POA) Amendment Act 2015.

They soon identified the accused as Yasa Akhilesh Reddy, a native of Boduppal of Rangareddy district, staying in London. The police then issued a lookout circular through the Bureau of Immigration in October last year.

Akhilesh Reddy came to Bengaluru in January and was detained by immigration officials, who informed the Kothapalli police. A team from here reached Bengaluru and arrested Akhilesh Reddy on Monday, Karimnagar rural ASP Shubham Prakash said, adding that he was brought to Karimnagar and produced before court.
He was remanded in the Karimnagar jail.

The reasons for the threat call were yet to be known.
