“Chusukooo… Telugu rap lo aadapuli vachesindiii
Rasukoo… Telugu rap scene eh marcheyabotundiii…”
Thus go the lines of a rap song by Hyderabad’s first female Telugu rapper – Sherni – who is making waves in the regional language rapping in the city.
Although there are many female rappers in other languages like Hindi and English, rapping is still a niche phenomenon and a rare concept in Telugu music scenario, says Sherni. Now, the rapper, through her music, is making an attempt to change that and bring Hyderabad close to the style of rapping.
“Telugu, as a language, is quite complicated when compared to Hindi and English. The usage of rhyming words and pronouncing them right to fit the rapping style are quite difficult. However, I have taken it up as a challenge and want to encourage more Telugu rappers to be bold and try out the genre of music,” share Ishitha, who was once a radio jockey and is now known as ‘rapper Sherni’.
“Well, rapping just came quite naturally to me. I would also turn melody songs into rap unknowingly and so I decided to pursue rapping. Now even when I have a headache, it gets cured if I sing or write a rap song. I totally enjoy the process,” she adds.
However, it was not quite easy for Sherni to make her own space in the world of hip-hop music. “In the beginning, I was very nervous as I used to perform in front of so many male rappers. With time, I have made many friends in the rapping circle and they support and encourage me at all stages,” shares Sherni, who raps through the day and works in the HR department in a company in the night.
The rapping circles in the city keep having rap cyphers – a gathering of rappers and beatboxers, who extemporaneously make music together. Such rap cyphers happen in various clubs and cafés, shares the rapper who takes part in these events regularly.
Sherni, whose rap songs ‘Aadapuli’ and ‘Corona rap’ received good response, now wants to write rap songs on issues related to women. She has already penned rap songs on Hyderabad ‘poris’, a song called ‘Nindalu’ which will talk about the hardships faced by a woman and also on women being raped. “With women-oriented subjects, I want to inspire more women in the city to boldly take up rapping if they are passionate about it,” she shares.
Apart from her personal tracks, she is also getting some collaboration offers with several albums – the latest one being with the famous Malayalam and Tamil band Open Your Wings. Sherni will be part of their upcoming Telugu rap song.
