Hyderabad: Tension escalated at Telecom Nagar in Raidurg when Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) teams accompanied by Raidurg police reached an open area with earth movers in the early hours of Thursday.

The HYDRAA teams asked the families there to leave the site as the land was allotted for a park. The families resisted leaving the area, claiming they had been staying there for the past few years and alleged no notices were given to them ahead of the demolition. Amid heated arguments, the HYDRAA teams allowed the earth movers to proceed and demolish the shelters.

Later, in an official statement, HYDRAA stated that in Gachibowli’s Telecom Nagar, BSNL employees were allotted 4,000 sq yards earmarked for a park during HUDA’s approved layout spread on 32 acres in 1982. Meanwhile, encroachers occupied about 1,500 square yards and residences had also been built, while some individuals attempted to encroach on the remaining 2,500 square yards.

The HYDRAA claimed that Telecom Nagar residents recently approached with a complaint and after inspection with revenue and GHMC officials, it was confirmed that 4,000 square yards allotted for the park had been encroached. On Thursday, encroachments were removed and boards were installed marking it as park land.
