Nirmal: Tension prevailed in communally sensitive Bhainsa in the district when two groups clashed in different parts of the town on Sunday night resulting in injuries to several persons including a Sub-Inspector, constable and some journalists. Commercial establishments and vehicles were torched by unidentified persons.

The reason for the clashes is yet to be established, but the situation is now under control, police said.

The two groups belonging to different sections of society began pelting stones in Julfekar Galli, Kubheer Road, Ganesh Nagar, Medarigalli, Bus stand localities at around 9 pm. They then set ablaze two-wheelers parked in the bus stand area, triggering tension. The warring groups were dispersed by policemen who swung into action. Security was supervised by Bhainsa DSP Narsing Rao.

A Sub-Inspector and five journalists covering the clashes suffered injuries.

Police said around 100 suspected persons were taken into custody. As many as 600 policemen led by 50 top officials were deployed across the town. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Bhainsa and Nirmal towns, while the seriously injured were rushed to Nizamabad. The condition of the injured persons is stable, In-charge SP Vishnu S Warrier said.

In May last, members of a group resorted to stone pelting against another group when a person in an inebriated condition created nuisance near their holy place, triggering tension in Bhainsa. About 20 suspects, who were responsible for the clashes, were taken into custody by police then.

On January 13 last year, tension prevailed when a group torched around 10 motorcycles belonging to another group following a communal clash in Bhainsa town. At least 59 persons were arrested for their alleged role in the riots. Communal violence claimed nine lives including six of a family in Bhainsa in 2008.
