Suryapet: A tenth-standard student, Tanusha Mahalakshmi, died by suicide at the Kasturba Gandhi Girls’ School in Nadigudem Mandal of Suryapet district early this morning.
The student, hailing from Kalakova village in Munagala Mandal, reportedly took her life by hanging on the school premises.
According to sources, Tanusha’s father visited her at the school on Monday evening. The reasons behind her drastic step have yet to be established. No suicide note was found at the scene.
The local police have registered a case of suspicious death. The school management has yet to respond to the issue.
This incident is raising concern as it is close on the heels of the suicide of a class V student, Sandhya, at BC Girls Gurukul School in Toopranpet in Yadadri Bhongir district, and a suicide attempt by a ninth-class student, Madhu Likhita, at KGBV Naspur in Mancherial district.
Over 90 students have reportedly died in Gurukul schools over the past 19 months. The increasing number of student deaths in hostels is attributed to factors such as poor hostel conditions.
