Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is gearing up to strengthen its green public transport initiative by adding 235 new electric buses in the Hyderabad region by the end of this year.
With this expansion, the corporation aims to provide a more sustainable, cost-effective, and commuter-friendly service across the city.
At present, there are a total of 265 electric buses already operating on various routes across Greater Hyderabad region, maintaining an encouraging 80 percent occupancy rate. To support the growing fleet, the corporation has been working on expanding charging infrastructure across multiple depots.
Charging units are currently functional at Secunderabad Cantonment, Hyderabad Central University (HCU), and Miyapur depots. Further, new charging units are also being installed at the Ranigunj and Hayathnagar bus depots with an estimated investment of around Rs 9 crore.
The Hayathnagar depot, which presently operates 55 electric buses, is expected to double its fleet with the addition of another 55 buses in the coming months.
Similarly, once the infrastructure at Ranigunj bus depot is completed, nearly 100 electric buses will be pressed into service from there. Plans are afoot to establish another charging unit in Kukatpally to facilitate operations in the northern parts of the city.
RTC operations officials noted that electric buses offer a significant cost advantage over diesel-powered ones. While diesel buses cost the corporation around Rs 20 per km to run, electric buses bring down the operational cost to just Rs 8 per km.
With this expansion, the TGSRTC hopes not only to meet the growing demand for city transport but also to encourage more commuters to switch to clean and affordable public mobility options.
