Hyderabad: The second wave of Covid-19 has hit India hard, triggering an unprecedented demand for oxygen and beds which has led to a serious shortage in hospitals. While experts are warning of a third wave soon, it is now important to prioritise our health and work on our immunity.
At a time when many are looking for ways to keep themselves fit and healthy, a couple from Hyderabad took up teaching Yoga to people including Covid patients through online classes for free of cost to improve immunity and reduce stress.
Monica Sruthi is a trained Yoga teacher while her husband Sai Santosh is aviation professional and a trained Yoga practitioner since the age of 5. The duo, running Aumkar Yoga International, started the initiative in April and they help the patients primarily with pranayama, which is said to be the science of regulating life force.
“Since the second wave hit our State, I and my wife decided to offer Yoga for those interested including Covid-19 affected individuals. Initially, we took an initiative by taking classes for our close families and friends via Zoom. One of our family members was tested positive and seen a great difference in the recovery process and the way he was able to breathe after including Yoga and Pranayama in his daily routine. This motivated us to extend the initiative,” says Santosh.
Eventually, the numbers increased and the couple has so far helped over 50 Covid patients their recovery for free.
Explaining how pranayama is an effective remedy to fight coronavirus, Santosh adds, “It develops the connection between your body and mind. It is proven to support multiple aspects of physical health including lung function, blood pressure and brain function. It activates the nervous system by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. Just chanting ‘aum’ will increase lung capacity and oxygen levels. It balances the inhalation and exhalation ratio.”
Breathing exercise including pranayama is one of the important ways that one can get rid of water products and toxins from our body, the couple says. Sruthi and Santosh are now planning to extend the initiative to more without charging a fee.
