Hailing from Sri Lanka, just 15-year-old Suntharalingam Piranawan already has multiple inventions under his belt.
Keeping the requirements in the area in mind, the teenager had previously created machines which can be used for coconut picking and coconut scraping. Adding to his creations, Piranawan has now created a solar-powered three-wheeler (tuk-tuk), made entirely of scrap materials.
It took Piranawan just eight months to make the solar-powered auto. In an interview with BBC News, he also shared that putting his time and energy into building the tuk-tuk helped him relieve stress during the pandemic.
Piranawan’s grandfather, Dureisami Suppaiya, has been a great support system for the teen. The grandfather has helped Piranawan in buying second-hand frames, handles, and wheels for the tuk-tuk as they could not afford new materials.
Now, Piranawan has already decided his next project will be even bigger. He told ‘BBC News’ that he hopes to build a “solar-powered car”. He encourages others to follow in his lead, taking scraps and turning them into something useful as he calls it a ‘really rewarding’ experience.
