Hyderabad: Now, botany students and those involved in wood business can identify different wood species using Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI), Mulugu’s toolkit. FCRI developed the unique wood or timber identification tool kit, which will be helpful in identifying different wood species at field level. The toolkit consists of 38 different timber species, which are widely available in Telangana. It costs about Rs 5,500 and is available for sale at the college.
The toolkit was developed by FRCI Assistant Professor Kapil Sihag and Sumit Yadav of the Department of Forest Products and Utilisation. Apart from helping the student community, the tool kit will also come in handy for forest department staff in identifying the timber species. This will be very helpful in curbing smuggling of woods as it can be tough to identify the species once a tree is cut and logs are made out of it, explained Kapil Sihag.
Based on the wood characteristics, students and even general public can easily identify the species, matching the wood samples with the 38 timber species samples available in the tool kit, he said. “We have been working on this project for over a year. Efforts are on to add more wood species in kit in future,” Kapil Sihag said.
