Hyderabad: Before iced lattes and elaborate mocktails became the norm, Indian summers were managed with simple, thoughtful drinks made right at home. These weren’t just about taste; they were created to cool the body, aid digestion, and help people get through long, draining days.
There’s an effortless charm to these recipes: seasonal ingredients, minimal effort, and flavours that feel instantly familiar. Even today, they remain some of the most effective and comforting ways to beat the heat.

From tangy and spiced to light and soothing, here are some traditional Indian coolers that truly stand the test of summer:
Panakam:
A traditional South Indian cooler made with jaggery, known for its cooling and digestive properties. Mix 1–2 tbsp jaggery in 1 glass of water, add a pinch of dry ginger powder, crushed pepper and cardamom. It helps replenish energy and cool the body.
Aam Panna:
A tangy raw mango drink that helps prevent heatstroke and refreshes instantly. Boil 1–2 raw mangoes, take the pulp, and mix 2 tbsp pulp in 1 glass of water with sugar, cumin powder, black salt and mint.
Phalsa Sharbat:
A sweet-tangy berry cooler, perfect for peak summer. Mash a handful of phalsa, strain, and mix with 1 glass of chilled water, 1–2 tsp sugar and a pinch of black salt.
Jaljeera:
A spiced, tangy drink known for aiding digestion. Mix 1 glass of water with ½ tsp roasted cumin powder, mint powder, black salt, lemon juice and a little tamarind pulp.
Kokum Sharbat:
A coastal favourite with a naturally cooling effect. Soak 5–6 kokum pieces, mash and strain, then mix with 1 glass of water, sugar and a pinch of cumin powder.

Chaas:
A light, probiotic drink that supports digestion and hydration. Whisk 3–4 tbsp curd with 1 glass of water, add salt, roasted cumin powder, and coriander or curry leaves.
Nimbu Pani / Lemon Soda:
A classic summer staple that refreshes instantly. Mix the juice of 1 lemon in 1 glass of water, add 1–2 tsp sugar, a pinch of salt, and optionally top with soda.
Sattu Sharbat:
A protein-rich drink popular in North India. Mix 1 tbsp sattu in 1 glass of chilled water, add salt, roasted cumin powder, lemon juice and optional green chilli. It keeps you full and energised.
Bael Sharbat:
Made from wood apple, this drink is known for its cooling and gut-friendly benefits. Mix 2–3 tbsp bael pulp with 1 glass of water, strain, and add jaggery or sugar.
Thandai:
A cooling drink made with nuts and aromatic spices. Blend 1 glass of milk with soaked almonds, fennel seeds, cardamom, pepper, rose petals and sugar. Chill before serving.
