TRAI survey shows high Call Silence Rates across all major telecom networks near Sangareddy
A TRAI assessment in and around Sangareddy found notable call silence levels across all major telecom operators. The drive test also evaluated call setup success, drop rates, voice quality and data speeds, revealing significant performance variations among Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL.
Hyderabad: Sure you experienced this many times. You are on a mobile call and suddenly the line goes silent, even when the call is live. You get to hear the other person’s voice after sometime or when you disconnect and call again.
This in mobile tech terminology is called ‘Call Silence’, which happens when due to packet loss on mobile networks. This is measured in terms of Call Silence Rate (CSR) and if it is higher it affects the call quality or user experience.
And now comes the interesting part.
Despite all the mobile phone companies bragging about excellent or unmatched coverage, all the four major telecom companies seem to be having a high CSR, as found by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its assessment of network quality checks taken up in and around Sangareddy.
Here are the TRAI findings about CSR (also called Call Silence / Mute rate): Reliance Jio (3.08 per cent), BSNL (2.60 per cent), Vodafone (2.06 per cent) and AirTel (0.77 per cent) on the packet switched network of 4G / 5G.
The TRAI teams conducted the IDT in areas covering over 355 km, capturing real-world conditions in urban, institutional, and residential zones. Key assessment points included Gajwel, Kuknurpalle, Gaiwel Bus Stand, Govt Hospital Narsapur, Medak, Sangareddy Bus Stand, Siddipet Collector Office, and several nearby towns, an official press release said on Monday.
Here are the other parameters:
Call Setup Success Rate (CSSR): The percentage of call attempts that successfully establish a connection between the caller and the receiver.
Reliance Jio and AirTel – 100 per cent, Vodafone – 89.16 per cent and BSNL – 88.82 per cent
Call Setup Time (CST): Time taken from initiating a call (pressing the dial button) to the point when the call is successfully connected (ringing or answered). It’s typical range is usually 2 – 6 seconds in good networks.
Reliance Jio – 0.69; Vodafone – 0.74; AirTel – 1 and BSNL – 2.38 (in seconds)
Drop Call Rate (DCR): Percentage of calls that are unintentionally terminated after being successfully established.
Reliance Jio, AirTel and Vodafone have zero percent, while BSNL has 6.29 per cent
Mean Opinion Score (MOS): A subjective measure of voice quality rated by users on a scale from 1 (Bad) to 5 (Excellent).
