Hyderabad: With major changes underway in suburban and main line train operations in the Hyderabad – Secunderabad railway divisions, residents of Neredmet and surrounding colonies have stepped up demands for the development of Neredmet Railway Station to cater to the growing commuter load.
In recent months, South Central Railway (SCR) has diverted several main line and suburban trains to ease congestion and improve MMTS services. Trains from Vikarabad towards Kazipet and Nalgonda are now being routed through the Sanathnagar – Ghatkesar bypass line.
However, the lack of a station on this section with a full length platform capable of accommodating 24-coach trains has created serious inconvenience for passengers.
As a result, daily commuters from areas such as Neredmet, Sainikpuri, Malkajgiri, Safilguda and ECIL are being forced to travel to distant stations like Charlapalli or Lingampalli to board or alight from diverted trains. Locals say this has led to increased travel time, higher transport costs and overcrowding at major terminals.
Taking note of the issue, residents and commuters, along with the Suburban Train Travellers Association, have urged railway authorities to develop Neredmet Railway Station as a full-fledged stoppage point for main line trains. They have pointed out that Neredmet is strategically located, has good approach roads, and is well connected by buses and other public transport, making it ideal for handling increased passenger traffic.
Noor Ahmed Ali, President, Long Distance Trains and MMTS Travellers Association said upgrading Neredmet station with a full-length platform, improved passenger amenities and better access would significantly reduce pressure on Charlapalli and Lingampalli railway stations, while providing much-needed relief to thousands of commuters in the northeastern parts of the city.
“The matter has been formally represented to the General Manager, SCR and also brought to the notice of union Minister Kishan Reddy, along with public representatives from the region,” he added.
Locals have appealed to the railway authorities to accord early approval for the station’s upgradation in view of the ongoing re-routing of trains and the rapid urban expansion around Neredmet.
“With several residential colonies, defence establishments and commercial areas nearby, Neredmet station has the potential to emerge as a key suburban rail hub if developed properly,” said Rajan, a resident expressing hope that authorities will respond positively to the long pending demand and take up development works at the earliest.
