Khammam: A Transport Department constable met with an accident while shifting a sand tractor that was seized for illegally transporting sand from the Munneru river at Gandhasiri in the district.

According to officials, in-charge DTO Srinivas and his team intercepted the tractor, which was illegally transporting sand, on Tuesday. Constable Ashok was sitting beside the tractor driver while it was being moved to the Three Town Police Station.

A speeding mini-truck then collided with the tractor, as a result of which the constable fell from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. He was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Khammam for initial treatment and was subsequently moved to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad.

DTO Srinivas also accompanied the injured constable to Hyderabad to oversee his treatment. Upon learning of the incident, Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi visited KIMS Hospital, inquired about Ashok’s health condition, and spoke with the doctors.

Senior officials, including Joint Transport Commissioners Chandrashekhar Goud, Ramesh, and Panduranga Rao, visited the hospital. It may be recalled that Bhupalpally DTO Venkanna lost his life when a coal lorry hit him in front of his office in June.

Even before the Bhupalpally incident had faded from memory, another accident involving Transport Department staff in Khammam caused serious concern among the staff. The senior officials advised staff to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols while conducting checks.
