Khammam: The State government has come up with several innovative programmes to unite farmers in the State, Agriculture Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy said on Sunday.
He said the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao wanted the farming community to work in cooperative mode to turn into a decisive force that would help them address their issues at ground level.
Niranjan Reddy along with Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar attended the centenary celebrations of Khammam District Cooperative Central Bank (DCCB) here on Sunday.
Stating that farmers when united could create wonders, he said the cooperative movement existed even during the period of British rule in India. Cooperative societies were established in 1904 to bring together peasant society and to meet their common economic needs, he said.
Following nationalisation of banks in 1971, cooperative banks have been working for the welfare of the farmers on par with the nationalised commercial banks, Niranjan Reddy said, stressing on the need of further strengthening the cooperative system to keep the corporate forces away.
He noted that the State government has been giving priority to strengthening the gram panchayats for the purpose of village development. About 12, 671 gram panchayats working independently have procured tractors and trolleys.
Transport Minister Ajay Kumar informed that for the first time in the history of Khammam district the DCCB managing committee was elected unanimously. He urged the bank to make efforts to expand its activities, to increase its turnover and focus on loan recovery.
The DCCB Chairman Kurakula Nagabhushanam speaking on the occasion informed that the business volume of the bank was Rs 2500 crore while the volume of the deposits was Rs 1100 crore. Rs 900 crore crops loans and Rs 200 crore gold loans disbursed through the bank.
Telangana State Cooperative Apex Bank (TSCAB) chairman L Ravinder Rao said Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) were offering effective banking services while MP Nama Nageswar Rao asked the cooperative banks to gear up to face the changes taking place in the banking system.
Collector RV Karnan asked the Khammam DCCB to give priority to digital transactions. Zilla Parishad Chairman L Kamalraj, MLAs S Venkata Veeraiah, B Haripriya, K Upender Reddy and MLC B Lakshminarayana, TS Seeds Corporation Chairman K Koteswar Rao and others were present.
